The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) (Homepage) is an annual auto show, held at the Cobo Center in Detroit, Michigan. It is among the largest and most prestigious auto shows, not only in North America but the entire automotive world across the globe. In all, over 700 vehicles are expected to be on display at the show.

The history of the show dates back to 1907 when the first auto show was held at the Beller’s Beer Garden at Riverside Park, in Detroit, Michigan. From then on, the show has continued unabated, except during the World War (and its aftermath) afflicted period of 1943-1952. The show has been held at the same Cobo Center venue since 1961. The significance of the show gathers further steam, due to the presence of the ‘Big Three’ giants of the American automobile industry, Ford, General Motors (GM) and Chrysler, in the Greater Detroit Metropolitan Area.

The 2010 edition of the show is slated for the period between January 11-24, 2010. As has been the general norm, the first two days, January 11-12 would be earmarked for Press Previews. This would be followed by two days of Industry Preview, for stalwarts of the industry, between January 13-14. The next day, January 15, is slated to be Charity Preview day. On this day, proceeds from the event directly benefit a wide range of children’s charities. The concept of a Charity Preview day has also been observed since long at the show. Finally, the show would be thrown open to the general public, for 9 days, between the period January 16-24, 2010.

This year’s show (in early 2009) was attended by over 650,000 people from the general public. Moreover, in terms of an economic contribution, the show added $350 million to Metro Detroit’s kitty, as per estimates of David Sowerby, C.F.A., portfolio manager and chief market analyst at Loomis Sayles & Co. [Many more statistics from this year's show here]

The Glenmoor Gathering of Significant Automobiles [Homepage] is an annual event held at the sprawling Glenmoor Country Club of Canton, Ohio which honors and celebrates automobiles – both cars and bikes, from yesteryears which have stood the test of time and have been well preserved by their owners.

The 15th edition of the Glenmoor Gathering of Significant Automobiles was held between September 18-20 2009 at the above venue, where a 1930 Duesenberg J convertible coupe by Hibbard & Darrin owned by the “OFF Brothers” – Ron Elenbaas and Bill Johnson of Richland, Michigan — received top honors. There were over 200 motorcars and motrocycles on display at this year’s event. Highlights of this year’s event included the cars owned by Mr. Edsel Ford, the only son of Ford Motors founder, Henry Ford. Among these cars were a batch of 10 vintage 1934 Ford hot rods, including the Pierson Brothers coupe as well as the So-Cal Speed Shop coupe.

A 1934 Ford Piersen Brothers hot rod, on display at the gathering

Other cars that stood out at the event included “French Front” offerings such as sweeping front Renaults and Franklins, immensely popular during their time.

Since its inception, attendance at this year’s event was the largest that the gathering has ever witnessed. Individuals honored at this year’s event included the aforementioned Mr. Edsel Ford as well as Alice Ramsey who became the first woman to drive across the United States in an automobile, back in 1909. In accordance, a 1909 Maxwell – exactly as Alice’s, and restored by Richard Anderson of Washington State , was on display. Moreover, this ast summer saw the car being driven by Richard’s daughter, Emily, on exactly the same route as Alice’s.

There was automotive artwork on display at the event too, with 10 artists showcasing their work and putting it up for sale. The poster for this year’s event was conceptualized and designed by Camilo Pardo, an internationally renowned automotive artist and former automotive designer whose claim to fame includes the redesign of the legendary GT-40 from Ford’s stable.

Proceeds from the event would not only help raise money and awareness to fund patient care programs, it would also contribute towards research and education, community outreach, and providing the latest technology to both these prominent hospitals.

Last year’s (2008) event was special for Chevy lovers as it celebrated 100 years of the parent company, General Motors’ inception, back in 1908. GM’s offerings showcased at the event included the rare Elmore Model 30 – powered by a three-cylinder motor that offered 24 horsepower, a 1939 LaSalle Series 50 and a 1966 Pontiac GTO Coupe.
